Mother Theresa modeled compassion, selflessness, and love to a world that needed it. Nothing can take that away from her, not even her own thoughts of doubt. Letters to superiors and confessors that are published in a new book, Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light, and excerpted in Time magazine this week reveal an intense spiritual darkness unknown to the world. Some may view her struggles as evidence that there is no God, but her candid and passionate revelations of her doubt only make her more human. Mother Theresa was a sinner she knew that and she knew she needed Jesus. But intellectual knowledge does not automatically transfer to emotional knowledge: that is the beauty and power of faith. In the midst of her pain and doubt, she forged ahead to be a light to the poor and a beacon of service to the world. Her human failings only heighten the glory she continues to bring to God.
