Raise the age people can buy fags to 18, because young people are too stupid to make up their mind at 16. Raise the drinking age to 21, because young people are too stupid to drink at 18. Raise the school leaving age to 18, because before that age you are too stupid to make your own career decisions, and should therefore be property of the state. Proposed increases in the driving age, because 17 year olds are too stupid to realise that trees outrank cars in the ‘inertia and momentum’ edition of top trumps. And guess what. The more we treat these soon to be adults like little children, they turn out to be not so stupid as to know they might as well oblige. At which point, the lefty’s pipe up, ‘Hey, I know, lets engage with them, and give them the vote’ Wibble wibble wibble. What is needed, IMHO, is to tell 16 years olds less of their rights, and more of their responsibilities.
