Social Distortion briefly penetrated the mainstream in 1990 with a self-titled album that featured "Ball and Chain" and became the first album to reach Gold status for the Orange County punk band. I still remember the first time I heard the song on Washington DC's WHFS, while driving down Route 7, and thought "This song is awesome! ... Depressing, but awesome!" But the decade preceding that commercial success had been brutal for founder and lead man Mike Ness, as he alternated between jail and detox, due to his heroin addiction. During that time, the band's albums became, as Social D's website puts it, "an ongoing dialogue about impulsiveness, its consequences and the hard struggle to overcome."
