What Exactly is a “Surge”? (A Critique of John McCain) |

Yesterday during an interview, Republican candidate John McCain expressed his support for the war in Iraq. Let us first examine the definition of a surge according to dictionary.com. Surge - a strong, wavelike, forward movement, rush, or sweep. During the short two minute exert of the interview as seen on yahoo.com news section, McCain uses the word surge five times as a reference to the United States military operations in Iraq. While a “surge” is supposedly a strong, forward movement, rush or sweep, I am terribly confused whether John McCain is talking about the same war? The military operations in Iraq have been going on since 2002. That’s a SIX year surge!! It is as if the word “surge” is supposed to create support for the war in Iraq.
