From the subscription-only Quorum Report: [Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)] told reporters that he’d continue to push for immigration reform although he was against legislation that died earlier this year. That stance on immigration reform led to the decision of prominent Hispanic Republican Massey Villarreal to break publicly with Cornyn earlier this month and come out in favor of Democratic candidate Rick Noriega. As reported in the Rio Grande Guardian, Villarreal, a board member of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, told a gathering of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce in San Antonio that Cornyn voted for amendments to the reform legislation that were "mean-spirited." Villarreal’s comments were significant because of his strong support of Republican candidates in the past.
