My friend, former United States Senator John Culver, used to say, In politics twenty-four hours is a lifetime. Ask Larry Craig. He was just waiting at the Minneapolis Airport for a connecting flight to go home to Idaho. Three hours later, his political career was over. A criminal act or even a careless comment, an ill thought or maybe a sudden event over which the office holder had no control can change the political future of not only the individual, but the party of his or her affiliation. Look no further than the sudden and unexpected revelations concerning Congressman Foley and House Pages near the end of last year's elections. If there is a message from the Craig incident it is this: As long as office seekers are going to claim that they are the perfect person, have the perfect family and represent all that is pure in America, they will continue to fall short of their own media created expectations.
