What a great post-writer's-strike salve this weekend was, what with the Academy Awards and the first new Saturday Night Live in months. Plenty has been said about Oscar night, so I'll just add a quick parenthetical (hooray for Freeheld, the heartbreaking and thoroughly deserving documentary-short winner) before basking in the joy of Tina Fey as host of SNL. There's a reason Fey went from the writer's room to the spotlight, and you see it in her return to the Weekend Update desk, the hilarious mock ad for the once-a-year period pill "Annuale" ("Hold on to your f'in hat!") and the Lipstick Jungle/Cashmere Mafia knockoff ("Lady Business"). Girl power! And ratings power: The episode achieved Saturday Night Live's highest ratings in two years.
