Although the wily Chinese are reputed to have used antibiotics as long as 2,500 years ago -- nearly half of Earth's lifetime -- penicillin began saving lives on a grand scale only after it was first purified it in the late 1930s. Despite this, scientists have insisted on developing more and more antibiotics, with the aim of making them safer, more powerful, and more microbe-specific -- in other words, more effective. It's time to face the fact that this is stupid. Although bacteria have an annoying habit of becoming resistant to existing drugs through whatever non-evolution-driven Satanic process causes this, penicillin is the only drug we need. Not just for infectious diseases, but for everything -- cancer, diabetes, gout, schizophrenia, you name it. If you're puzzledby this declaration, let me repeat: Penicillin has saved lives.
