Over at Get Religion, my friend Terry Mattingly has the latest installment in his Sisyphean task of coming up with a definition of "evangelical" that is useful, precise, and faithful to the distinctives of this Christian tradition. Good luck, TMatt. The occasion for this episode of "What's an Evangelical?" is a New York Times article about a group of Evangelicals that "sent a letter to President Bush saying that both Israelis and Palestinians have 'legitimate rights stretching back for millennia to the lands of Israel/Palestine,' and that they support the creation of a Palestinian state 'that includes the vast majority of the West Bank.' What interests Terry isn't so much the substance of the story as religion writer Laurie Goodstein's attempt to show Times readers the diversity of opinion encompassed by the term "Evangelical."
