Judiciary Oversight: The United States Committee on the Judiciary has been holding its "Executive Nomination" confirmation hearings for a new Attorney General. The nominee is Michael B. Mukasey. He is replacing Alberto Gonzales, who resigned some weeks ago. The Chairman of the committee is Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT).Just the Facts: Some will say that former Attorney General Gonzales resigned in disgrace. The Judiciary Committee's questions for Mr. Mukasey have been very pointed, particularly on the second day of the hearings. In addition to becoming the nation's chief law enforcement officer, this Attorney General (AG) will have a heavy hand in the oversight of the nation's domestic spying program, (or programs?). Along with the members of the Judiciary Committee, we all hope that his hand as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States will be very different than that of Gonzales.
