The birth of reality television has always been considered to be The Real World. When MTV put out their first season of the hit tv show, pundits everywhere declared that a new genre of television was available for public consumption. The Real World has gotten the credit for spawning off other reality tv shows, from Survivor to Big Brother. But really, the country's fascination with the lives of others goes back much further than even MTV. The nation has always been hungry for voyeuristic details of the lives of strangers. As a country, we have delighted in the suffering and mistakes of previously unknown people that are displayed on our television screens. This may have come into focus with The Real World, but that was not the starting point. Consider the crime shows that can be found on just about every station on the television.
