I predicted that in the wake of the Haneef affair, Howard's mob would introduce stronger' laws on terrorism. The logic appeared unanswerable; it would be argued that the Haneef exercise had revealed real or imagined deficiencies in the existing laws, which would be used to justify new stronger laws, thus maintaining the relentless efforts to wedge Labor. I suggested that the new stronger laws and BTW don't you just love the way Howard always talks about whether the laws are strong enough', thereby forcing anyone who opposes them to be in favour of weak' laws but anyway I thought the obvious targets for new laws would be bail (terrorists not to be eligible under any circumstances) or defence lawyers (must be approved by minister and comply with code of conduct or some such).
