Man Who Had Sex With Dog May Have to Register as Sex Offender

A Buckeye, AZ man found guilty of animal cruelty for having sex with his dog will face a judge next month to determine if he must register as a sex offender. Douglas Burns, 54, will appear in court Oct. 19 after pleading guilty to one count of cruelty to animals with a sexual motivation in July, according to Maricopa County Superior Court. The judge will determine whether Burns must register as a sex offender after viewing the completed psychosexual evaluation ordered by the court. Although Burns’ crime occurred before the state made bestiality illegal in Arizona in September of last year, a law states that the judge has the power to make Burns register as a sex offender, according to Mike Anthony Scerbo, Maricopa County Attorney’s Office public information officer.
