On Sunday I had the opportunity to go diving with a small group from the dive shop going out spearfishing. We went to the Wall where I've done the open water dives in Puerto Rico. It's a nice 30 minutes ride from La Parguera to Wall which runs 20 miles parallel to the south shore of the island. It was a calm balmy day and we suited up swiftly so we could get underwater. The guys wasted no time in getting to work. We had two fishermen and two divers. In addition to the spear guns there were lobster snares and big mesh bags to carry the haul. It was really fun to experience this type of fishing. To me, growing up in Michigan, fishing means snagging a worm on a hook and plunking it in the water, then watching your bobber for some kind of activity. Watching for the tellatale jiggles, where you give a swift jerk on the line, and reel it in, usually to find no fish and no more worm.Spearfishing reminded me more of hunting.
