South Korea Lifts Ban on U.S. Beef Imports |

After weeks of demonstrations that held South Korea at a standstill, the South Korean government announced that it will lift the ban on U.S. beef imports, to be effective on Thursday. It is also said to publish quarantine and inspection guidelines that will enable the South Korean beef importers to ask the government to examine American beef and release those that have passed such inspections. The 5,300 tons of American beef that had been held in customs and quarantine facilities will be inspected starting this week. In response to the ban lift, the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions, an umbrella group, announced Wednesday that it will block the transport of U.S. beef from warehouses around the country. Some protestors told the NY Times that recent events would ignite an explosive resistance from the people and vowed that the demonstrations would continue until a renegotiation was executed.
