What would happen to your Facebook page or MySpace account or even your blog if something happened to you? There’s an interesting column in today’s Wall Street Journal about how various on-line sites handle the passing on of someone who has an account. But the most interesting thing is that while the sites will turn your page into a memorial for you, they won’t give family members your user id and password after you’ve passed away. If your loved one did not provide password data before dying, most Internet-based companies have instituted guidelines to help. When a survivor wants to take over a deceased member’s AOL account, says a spokeswoman, the company asks to see a copy of a death certificate and means of proof that the survivor is authorized to administer the estate.
