By Chris Dalby Walking through the streets of Moscow, an eerie feeling soon grips the observant spectator. A sentiment of contained anger and subdued power that threatens to burst out after being quelled for too long. The ebb and flow of Russian influence has been a constant of world politics for centuries with the heights of Catherine the Great dominating the failures of Soviet policies and the rude awakening in the late 80s. Yet one factor which unites many Russians is their unwavering adoration and pride in their nation. ‘Mother Russia’ may have become a derided saying in the West, affiliated with copycat pseudo-Soviet villains from the Bond mould, but in Russia itself, the phrase still speaks volumes. Of course, as national boundaries threaten to become blurred in the modern communication age, patriotic resurgences can be seen throughout the world, no less clearly than in the US with President Bush’s ‘with us or against us’ rhetoric.
