I live in a state that banned smoking in restaurants something like ten years ago. At the time I thought it was unfair to smokers but then I started thinking it was also unfair of smokers to subject nonsmokers to their smoke. The law changed and I didn't really think much about it after that. A few weeks ago I was on a very long trip and I stopped at a restaurant for lunch in a different state. The hostess asked me if I wanted smoking or nonsmoking and I almost choked. I thought she was joking. Nope, they allowed smoking in that state so I asked for nonsmoking. She took me to the table and thinking she had misunderstood me I repeated that I wanted the nonsmoking section and she told me we were IN the nonsmoking section. There was smoke everywhere. Suddenly the arguments about not being able to segregate smoke effectively came rushing back and I was thankful I lived in a state where you had to smoke outside.
