The shabby, bumbling and slow-witted police detective in the rumpled raincoat with a cigar never far from his lips is perhaps one of TV's most recognisable figures. Played by Peter Falk from 1968 to the series eventual demise in 2003, Lieutenant Columbo worked the homicide section of the Los Angeles Police Department, and proved every week that appearances were deceptive and there was more to him than met the eye (sic). Columbo's absent-mindedness was a crafted persona designed to lull criminal suspects into a false sense of security. In truth he had a keen eye for detail and would ferret out the tiny inconsistencies in a suspect's story and repeatedly call attention to them, feigning a lack of understanding about how such strange things could happen, until the suspect eventually cracked under the constant gentle but focused questioning and confessed the crime.
