Drakes Estero in Point Reyes National Seashore is home to an oyster farm, as many a Bay Area foodie knows. It’s been there for over 100 years, and many environmentalists laud it as an example of sustainable stewardship, illustrating that gentle human use can coexist with an ecosystem’s native plants and animals. The National Park Service, however, says no use is good use, and wants to shut it down and restore the Estero to wilderness. They plan to evict the oyster farmer when his lease is up.
