Children Now has released today a new "2008 California Report Card: The State of the State's Children that highlights the generally poor health and education status of the state's children by assigning letter grades to key individual determinants, such as a C in health insurance, a C- in K-12 education and a D+ in obesity. This report could not have arrived at a better time at the beginning of the year of education proclaimed by Governor Schwarzenegger and as California is grappling with both health care (how to insure all children in the state) and a huge budget deficit. Policy makers will have to directly face the impacts that decisions on health, education, and the deficit affect children and this report will remind all concerned with children of these choices we will be making that will affect the state for years to come.
