The California Budget Project has published a 9 page document that is packed with information, charts, and graphs, and is very timely. Planning for California's Future: The State's Population is Growing, Aging, and Becoming More Diverse, is a must read for those who follow California public policy. Even with the current focus on just getting a budget passed this year, those who want to keep the debate about budget reform in line with the trends that underlie policy decisions, should look up from their desks, search the horizon, and take a look at this document. This report lays out three trends that affect state and local budgets in California: We are big and getting bigger: Between 2000 and 2020, the state is projected to add approximately 10 million people, roughly equivalent to the population of the state of Michigan.
