Let me weigh in with a comment on Bruce's. That quote he cites is pretty good evidence that the Simpsons has often taken a fairly sophisticated approach to religion, amongst the slapstick. Homer's worry: "What if we picked the wrong religion? Every week, we're just making God madder and madder!" Thyat's a pretty good refutation to the famous Pascal's Wager. The wager is named after the 17th Century philosopher Blaise Pascal. His argument was that someone without faith should chose to be Christian rather than be an atheist because if Christianity is right, you get eternity in heaven., And if atheism is right, you don't lose anything.
