"I think I'm having my best season," he said.I think that's a little tough to swallow. Last year Merriman played 12 games and registered 17 sacks. This year he has played nine games and registered 5.5 sacks. Clearly, there's much more to playing defense than just how many sacks you get, but Merriman is first and foremost a pass rusher, and he's not rushing the passer as well as he used to.Really, though, Merriman has to say he's playing better than ever because of the implications of a decline in his play. Merriman, of course, played 12 games last year because he was suspended four games after testing positive for steroids. If Merriman isn't as good now as he was last year, the logical question is whether steroids fueled his 2006 performance.
