Filed under: Browns, ClevelandAdam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Cleveland Browns have signed defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to a six-year, $42 million contract extension, including $20 million in guarantees. That's a whopping deal for Rogers, the player the Browns acquired last week in a trade with the Detroit Lions. I'm a Rogers fan and thought that trade, which sent a third-round pick and cornerback Leigh Bodden to the Lions, had the potential to help both teams. But adding in the big raise for Rogers raises questions.Is it really a wise move for the Browns to tie up that big a guarantee in a player who has incredible athletic talent but is at times hard to motivate? A more sensible approach to Rogers would have been to tell him, "Have a great season in 2008, and we can assure you a big raise in 2009." If Rogers lasts five or six years and plays his best, he's absolutely worth this kind of money. But he's about to turn 29, weighs 340 pounds and has battled injuries. [ Full article ] |
