I've realised that I've been wasting my time reviewing rubbish programmes when I could have been telling you all how great Empire's Children is (Channel 4, Monday, 9pm). In the last episode, I watch Jenny Eclair have a near nervous breakdown in Malaysia and undergo an incredibly fascinating journey into her, and the British Empire's, past. So, stupid me, and my Empire blood line, is finally getting around to telling you about this fine show just in time for the last episode (although I did do a preview before the first in the series complete with free clips of the show, so I'm obviously a liar) Anyway, step away from the lies and into the heritage of Adrian Lester. Adrian's grandfather, James, was, by all accounts, a towering figure of a man (or a 'big bugger' for us Northerners). Now 89 and, sadly, too ill to appear on camera, James Lester's life casts a large, poignant shadow over the latest edition of this colonial root-tracing.
