Well, gotta run, but The Tracker late in the California a.m. looked at all the copy on the big Russian mini-submarine-packed icebreaker voyage to the north pole over the past few days to plant a flag of claimed sovereignty on the seafloor more than two miles down. It’s mostly politics and related bloviation. But one ought sneak in recognition of a fine quote when it arises. The LA Times’s David Holley included word from an American diplomatic representative who sniffed to reporters, “I’m not sure of whether they’ve put a metal flag, a rubber flag, or a bedsheet on the ocean floor. Either way, it doesn’t have any legal standing.” Yeh, but we should have thought of it first. If only that pesky Lomonosov Ridge across the Arctic abyssal plain hooked into the Alaskan, not the Russian, part of the continental shelf….and besides, the US doesn’t have any nuclear powered icebreakers that carry mini-submarines.
