Bob McDonald and gang at the Canadian Broadcast Corp’s Quirks and Quarks radio show had a fine roundup of interviews and stories over the weekend, including pieces on the sophistication of modern prosthetics, those fat-scoffing vibrated mice that already have gotten big coverage, and our relationship to flying lemurs. Speaking of that last one, notable is Q&Q’s choice of illus for it. Another of the show’s items is on the widely-reported news of amphibian casts, or body impressions, dating back hundreds of millions of years. Flying lemurs, one study has it, are the closest living relatives to the earliest steps along the primate branch of mammalian evolution. But what strikes the eye is the similarity of the image of one such lemur gliding along, its body outlined in the taut skin of its airfoil, and that of the ancient salamanders. This is of no significance — just a bit of a curiosity. -CP [ Full article ] |
