I try hard not to read Jonah Goldberg more than is humanly possible, since I tend to suffer from excessive head-spinning afterwards. But every once in a while, a headline makes such avoidance near-impossible, either from curiosity or the same gene that drives people to the circus or horror movies. In his op-ed piece today, "Too Uninformed to Vote?", Mr. Goldberg begins with an easy pop-quiz (ie, "Can you name all three branches of government?"), and then spends the rest of his time on the midway trying to make a case that Americans are too stupid to vote, and therefore a test should be given before allowing them to do so. Now, he doesn't say Americans are too stupid. In fact, he tries to contend the opposite, while getting a dig at knee-jerk political junkies (code for liberals) who he insists do believe it. No, no, Mr. Goldberg says, it's merely that Americans don't care about politics and couldn't explain, "what a cloture vote is." Never mind that his initial pop-quiz [ Full article ] |
