Democrats surviving contested primaries won Senate seats last year in Montana, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. As I've argued many times, contested primaries keep candidates in the news, help them hone their ground operation, and give them a "bandwagon effect" boost after their victories are splashed all over newspapers and newscasts. But candidates still would prefer to avoid them, and Texas Senate candidate Rick Noriega is doing his best to make that happen. Noriega said he hoped Watts would stand aside and allow him a free run against U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, in the 2008 general election.
