As schools across Britain break out for the long summer, Ofsted have told the Government that History teaching needs to be more chronological taking into account the religious and cultural uproar around "one damn thing after another". So what does the National Curriculum teach at the moment? Well at 11 children should spend 10-15 hours learning how the medieval church affected people's lives. Another 10-15 on the achievements of the Islamic states between 600-1600. The teaching of Elizabeth I's reign in Year seven reads like a church history in a syllabus that calls religion a "life or death problem". That's the other thing about history, it repeats itself. Around the world the teaching of religion is being resurrected. In Russia last year Christian Orthodox teaching became compulsory in some schools, in Germany today the minister for culture has said theological questions should be brought into the teaching of Biology.
