Thanks to Republican office holders for declining registration numbers An article in the East Valley Tribune points out that the majority of new voters (53%) are registering as Independents. Democrats are holding second place at 36%. Republicans, bringing up the rear with a slim 11%, are followed only by 1% who are registering as Libertarians.Two points are worthy of consideration: After the Comprehensive Immigration Reform debacle, many Republicans, furious at being let down by President Bush and Arizona Senators Jon Kyl and John McCain, declared they were no longer comfortable in a party where their own elected leadership disregarded those who had put them in office—the Republican voters and party activists. But equally as important was a 1998 amendment to the Arizona Constitution, known as Prop. 103.This little gem permitted electors to vote in any primary election if registered as an Independent, or having no party declared.
