Raid! Tech's offensive weapons are real pests to SMU's Bennett

By JIM REEVES DALLAS -- Watching Texas Tech's offense is a little like turning on the lights in a roach-filled room. Waterbug wide receivers are suddenly skittering in every direction.You might get one or two, but half a dozen others are running up your pants leg before you can hop, skip or jump out of the way.Phil Bennett's SMU Mustangs didn't need a defense Monday afternoon at Ford Stadium.They needed pesticide.This was supposed to be a statement game for the Mustangs, a chance to validate and confirm the advances they've made under Bennett over the last few seasons against a team that has been a particular pain in the you know what to the Ponies.There's even been talk that this year's Mustangs, whose 6-6 record last season represented their first non-losing season since 1997, might have a shot at seven victories and a chance to snap their 23-year bowl-less streak.Let's hold all the optimism for another couple of weeks.
