What is a Project Manager? |

After last weeks comments I seem to have struck a cord about what is a project manager. A project can be defined as something that is temporary with a definite start and end date with the objective of creating a unique product, service or outcome. A Manager can be defined as someone responsible for leading and organising a group of people to achieve a common set of goals often with budget responsibility. Some people that I speak to tell me that they get given projects to manage by their line manager and therefore that makes them a project manager. When I ask what these projects are? They often describe business as usual tasks such as producing a new spreadsheet showing certain information. While this does initial fit the requirement of a project by creating an outcome it does not have a definite end and not is temporary.
