Former Gang Members Ask Governor Schwarzenegger to Sign AB 1049 for Youth Parole Re-Entry Programs |

Russo Former gang members, and youth leaders appeared in front of Governor Schwarzenegger's office in the State Capitol to urge him to sign AB 1049 (Solorio) to provide for youth parole re-entry programs. They signed a three foot by four foot support letter to the Governor and delivered the letter to his office. They were accompanied by Jose Solorio, Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee and author of the bill, and Assemblymember Anna Caballero, who chairs the Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention. With state prisons overcrowded to the point that federal judges may impose caps on those incarcerated or order the release of some prisoners, and a recidivism rate of youthful gang members contributing to prison and jail overcrowding, the dollars and cents involved in this program are compelling from the perspective of cost saving, public safety, and rescuing young adults and children from a life of crime.
