Paul Martin As Scott Niedermayer

Enjoying my final, pre-hockey month in Rehovot, Israel -- visiting my son, Simon's, family -- I felt that the news of Paul Martin's re-signing in New Jersey instantly inspired a thought about Scott Niedermayer. Actually a few thoughts. The first is that I'm tickled that Martin is returning to New Jersey. The second is that Paul sits precisely where Nieder sat -- in the far right corner of the Devs' dressing room. The third is that Martin -- like it or not -- is the new Niedermayer in New Jersey. Heck, no, I'm not in the least suggesting that Paul is as good -- or ever will be -- as the Scott we knew and appreciated for years in East Rutherford. Nieder is one of a kind; always was, always will be. But there are significant similarities. Like Niedermayer, Martin is a low-key performer in and out of the dressing room. Low-key, but not low octane. And similar to Scott, Paul was underplayed and under-noticed in his first few years in New Jersey. Nieder needed center stage and
