The movies have, since the days of Griffith, been used to rally public conscience. The best examples are, of course, during the years of the First and Second World Wars. During WWI Hollywood cranked out 'Hate the Hun' propaganda pictures 'til the American government actually asked them to stop because the enthusiasm for hatred these films were creating would make peace with the Germans difficult. On the other hand, WWII saw Britain produce some of the best national cinema of the century, with a social awareness decades ahead of its time. In between, at least in the United States, was the Great Depression.
