New Study Confirms Abortion Facts [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]

For decades the pro-choice side in the abortion debate have consistently made two arguments: A) that banning abortion does not stop abortions, only forces them underground; and B) forcing them underground into an unregulated, unlicensed black market increases the risks to a woman's health. A new study of abortion practices worldwide shows that both arguments are absolutely true. Women are just as likely to get an abortion in countries where it is outlawed as they are in countries where it is legal, according to research published Friday... "The legal status of abortion has never dissuaded women and couples, who, for whatever reason, seek to end pregnancy," Beth Fredrick of the International Women's Health Coalition in the United States said in an accompanying commentary.
