I’ll never forget watching Friday Night Videos in early 1983 and catching “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” by Culture Club. I didn’t realize Boy George was–well–actually a boy until my cousin told me so ten years before coming out of the closet himself. But I wasn’t concerned about Boy George’s sexuality when watching the video. It was his incredible voice, along with the music, that kept my attention. The song was so catchy that I couldn’t get it out of my mind for days. It sounded like nothing on the radio at the time. I soon found myself on my way to a neighborhood store called Record City, where all the teenagers hung out. I felt so out of place there but didn’t care; I saved enough money to buy the Kissing to Be Clever album. I was shocked to see Melissa, a girl who lived down the block from me, working behind the register. She pointed to the picture of Boy George and said, “He’s gay, you know!” I [ Full article ] |
