I’m not sure whether to admire Howard’s brazenness or wonder if he’s lost the capacity to spin as well as he used to. Out of the blue he announced the federal government would fund a new hospital at Devonport (also mentioned by observa in comments and the subject of a post over at Blogocracy). Here’s an exchange from his press conference in Tassie: JOURNALIST: But they always had hospital with severe sustainability questions. I mean, they’re saying that you cannot have two intensive care units in the same area, it’s not feasible. Have you looked at that? PRIME MINISTER: I think the decision that we’ve taken will be warmly welcomed by the people of the region. In other words screw the economic feasibility, screw good health management practices, it’s gunna be popular.
