Pre-trading deadline rumors are an annual rite of summer in New York, Boston, Seattle and every other major league city. One of the names that's been a featured attraction the last couple of years has been Dontrelle Willis. Blessed with a gifted left arm and only 25, Willis has long been a favored target for teams in both leagues. The Marlins, happy as they've been with his production, are skinflints of the highest order and it's been considered a fait accompli that they'd peddle Willis before his price tag gets too high. If they had traded him last July they would have collected a pretty price and if they'd pulled the trigger after his 13-4, 2.39 ERA first half in 2005 they could probably have drawn three guys who would be starting for them right now. They held onto Willis, though, and it was hard to slam them for it.
