META tags are still very important in search engine optimization (SEO). I would rate at least the META Title as being nearly as important as the pages body text (web copy). I have had placeholder pages with nothing more than a coming soon message that have ranked superbly in the search engines because of the page title (META title). Seriously folks this area is still pure SEO gold. The first 150 to 200 characters are extremely valuable. Make good use of them keyword and phrase wise. I still use all three META tags (title, description and keywords). You almost have to because at least one of the major search engines still looks at the meta description and if you don't over-pad the keywords META it too can be just as valuable. I've read a lot of debate about the META description and META keywords not being relevant for search engines anymore.
