You can make the lightweight replacement for Nautilus, PCMan, the default file manager for the "Places" portion of the Gnome menu by editing a few configuration files located in /usr/share/applications. After installing PCMan, the following two configuration files need to be edited (with superuser credentials): /usr/share/applications/nautilus-computer.desktop /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop The respective line starting with Exec needs to be changed to the following: For Computer: Exec=pcmanfm / or Exec=gksudo pcmanfm / (for superuser browsing) For Home: Exec=pcmanfm After saving all the files, rather than using Nautilus, the Gnome menus will now use PCMan for your file browsing needs.
