Guest blog by Doug Sacrison, the Crime Rant intern A report from CNN last week confirmed that over 1 in every 100 adults in the United States is in jail. Wow, we really made it. Out of almost 230 million Americans, 2,319,258 of them are currently behind bars. That's a lot of people. Maybe you're in jail right now. Sorry about that. It seems that in an effort to be number one at everything, the U.S. has put more people in prison than any other country in the world. The report stated that, thankfully, someone else has realized that those figures seem a little high and that maybe something should be done about it. Criminal justice experts are pointing to the fact that some offenders are ending up in jail longer because of harsh sentencing methods, like the three strikes laws, which gain longer prison getaways. Really, though, 1 person in every 100 people is in jail right now. It's going to be weird to think about that from now on. I may just look around a room and think, [ Full article ] |
