Posted on behalf of Gannett News Service reporter Bill Theobald: Given his Hollywood and television experience, and the modern emphasis on image in politics, it is no surprise that Fred Thompson’s first presidential campaign event was well scripted and well staged. Thompson spoke to a group of a few hundred supporters on a stage with a backdrop that was built to look like the limestone front of a government building. The dais was flanked by American and Iowa flags and those were flanked by giant video screens, which were flanked by huge speakers. The room is part of the Des Moines convention center and was sectioned off to a size that allowed the crowd to fill it up. Placards and handmade signs (made during a sign-painting party Wednesday night) hung on the side walls and people entering the room were given placards and small American flags.
