If Chargers Keep Losing, Will Pete Carroll Replace Norv Turner? |

And Mortensen says Chargers owner Dean Spanos already knows who he'd want as Turner's replacement: USC head coach Pete Carroll.According to Mortensen, Carroll would be willing to leave USC if offered full control over all aspects of the franchise, from the draft to signing free agents to hiring his assistants. And although Spanos has never been willing to give that control to a head coach before, an implosion by the Chargers this year would, Mortensen says, likely lead to Spanos firing general manager A.J. Smith and giving total authority to Carroll. Four games into the season might seem premature to start burying Turner, and Carroll surely doesn't want this speculation going on during USC's season.
