2007 has been the year of the Zombie, with plenty of gore-licious mayhem in Planet Terror, 28 Weeks Later and 30 Days of Night. It seems fitting that I am Legend closed the year with thrills and chills, plus a nest of ghoulish zombies. In 2010, humans are on the brink of extinction thanks to a genetically engineered virus that killed 90% of the world’s population. Only a 1% of the survivors are immune, the others transform into cannibalistic monsters. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the sole survivor in New York City, ground zero for the outbreak. The imagery is utterly chilling. Nothing could express the isolation and loneliness more than of the streets overgrown with weeds and teeming with herds of deer. Neville’s only companion is Sam, his beloved dog.
