Filed under: 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, BooksNolan's favourite children's book of the moment contains a scene where a group of dancing, circus-attending Gingerbread People get mauled and eaten by a hungry dog. In the next scene, dismembered gingerbread mouths and gingerbread arms litter the kitchen, horrifically. It sounds a bit like a deranged horror movie, but it's the Ginger Bear, and I'm not totally sure what to make of it. It's a really cute book. Horace, a slightly unwashed-looking little boy, helps his Mom bake a Gingerbread Man. Attempt after attempt to eat the golden cookie get quashed, until Ginger Bear escapes in the night to cook up a batch of friends and have a party. Until the dog kills all his friends. But it's OK, Ginger Bear escapes! He skis on top of a Gingerbread House in a store, safe from cookie-loving dogs. Bliss.Actually, I enjoy reading it.
