Republicans Commit Themselves To Bush's War |

Nothing could be clearer after Bush's dreadful speech on Thursday (Media Pans Bush Speech): having a deeply unpopular President try to sell a deeply unpopular war to an impatient public is a volatile mix. It is for this reason that Bush has been hiding behind Gen. Petraeus and the military for the past month (well, actually, for the past few years), conveniently forgetting that it is civilians that set policy and the military that carries it out, not the other way around. But the Decider needed someone a lot more popular and respected than himself to be the salesperson on this. As noted last week, Bush being the salesman by publicly taking on the policy as his own might rally a few GOP voters weakly committed to the party, but won't change any one else's mind. In fact, TIME wrote this the day of the speech: ...if news of a slow drawdown may be popular, Bush himself still is not.
