Isn't a primary duty of our elected officials to protect citizens? The morning daily reports that southern Arizona communities are split over the issue of border checkpoints. Who would imagine that a scant few years after the horrific assaults on our country on September 11, 2001, such an argument would draw enough traction to be given consideration? U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords a liberal Democrat representing southern Arizona, voted with her congressional colleagues in support of a measure that would, in fact, prohibit permanent checkpoints. According to the paper, one group advising Gifford said a permanent checkpoint would be “ill-advised, even reckless.” Wonder what group that was? That this irresponsible folly is being studied is recklessness personified. Arizona's Border Patrol, on the other hand, has proposed three new, permanent checkpoints. [ Full article ] |
